What does this picture mean?

I found this to be a tremendously startling and powerful juxtaposition.

At last week's World Economic Forum in Davos, world leaders floated in and out of the YouTube room, answering video-clip questions posed by non-attendees. Here is Hamid Karzai, captured by the fine folks at TechCrunch, looking somewhat bemused and staring at a series of streaming videos. For those who don't know, Karzai is president of Afghanistan, a country that was a global pariah less than a decade ago, and a land that is still abounding with violence and instability.

I wonder what Mr. Karzai, with his trademark Karakul hat, is really thinking. Does he think technologies like this will help his fledgling democracy to someday be an energetic participant in the wired world? Or does he see this as some kitschy kind of Western curiosity, a gadget that allows for a superficial species of dialogue and self-expression?

Either way, you can see from his expression that it has seized his attention.
